The challenge

top.legal manages the full contract lifecycle — creation, negotiation, signing, analysis — for enterprise teams. Contracts are unforgiving: extraction has to be accurate, collaboration has to be real-time, and downtime is a dealbreaker for legal workflows.

The platform needed to process a growing document volume reliably while supporting live multi-party contract negotiation.

What we built

A distributed processing pipeline

Node.js/TypeScript microservices handling 1,000+ documents per day at 99.9% uptime, with automated data extraction feeding the platform's contract intelligence.

A legal knowledge graph

A Neo4j graph of 100K+ legal entities with custom Cypher queries — powering portfolio-wide contract queries and risk identification.

Real-time negotiation

Collaborative contract editing via Operational Transformation (TipTap + WebSocket) supporting 20+ concurrent users in live dealrooms.

Event-driven re-architecture

Led the migration to AWS EventBridge and Step Functions, cutting processing time 70% — while mentoring a team of six engineers.

Results

  • 1,000+ documents/day processed at 99.9% uptime
  • Processing time cut 70% by the event-driven migration
  • Real-time collaboration shipped for 20+ concurrent negotiators
